Integrating weed-suppressive cultivar and cover crops for weed management in organic sweetpotato production

Abstract Field studies were conducted in 2021 Kibler and Augusta, AR, to determine the effect of winter cover crops cultivar selection on weed suppression sweetpotato [ Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] yield. The split-split-plot evaluated three [cereal rye ( Secale cereale L.) + crimson clover Trifolium incarnatum L.)], [winter wheat Triticum aestivum clover], fallow; weeding (with or without); four cultivars (‘Heartogold’, ‘Bayou-Belle-6’, ‘Beauregard-14’, ‘Orleans’). Heartogold had tallest canopy, while Beauregard-14 Bayou Belle-6 longest vines at 5 8 wk after transplanting. Sweetpotato canopy was about 20% taller weedy plots compared with hand-weeded treatment, shorter under interference. Canopy height vine length not related biomass suppression.
